HOUSE NUMBER FAQ

There are a few things to look at to determine the quality of house numbers. Some items are obvious, while others are not. Many address numbers will look good at first glance, but upon closer inspection you will notice the quality may not be as you expected. We'll list some of the main things to look for when buying address numbers for your home or building: 1. Are the numbers made from plastic, a plastic/aluminum sandwich layer, iron, or a premium metal such as aluminum? 2. If the address numbers are made from metal, how thick is the metal? Is the metal hollow on the backside (such as some castings), or are the numbers solid metal? 3. For metal house numbers, are they coated or uncoated? If they are coated, are they powder coated or painted? 4. For numbers that are coated, are they finished on the backside (often not visible in product photos)? 5. Are there exposed holes on the front of the number for mounting screws, or is the mounting hardware hidden on the back? 6. If the numbers have hidden studs, how are the studs secured? Are they glued in place or solidly threaded in? 7. Is the mounting hardware plastic, iron, stainless steel, or aluminum? In the next 3 questions we'll explain in detail why each of these things plays an important factor in quality.

We'll break this one down into sections: 1. PLASTIC, IRON, OR ALUMINUM When choosing the material that your house numbers are made from, plastic will be by far the cheapest. It's a low cost material that can be cut quickly and does not require finishing. This makes plastic house numbers very inexpensive to manufacture. The downside is that plastic address numbers look like plastic, because they are! This gives them a low quality aesthetic. The colour of plastic will fade in the sunlight as it has limited UV resistance, so with time the numbers will not look the same. Plastic is also flexible, so with time plastic house numbers may change shape as they are subjected to heat, cold, and sunlight. the most common type of plastic numbers are made from HDPE plastic. Alumapanel is also a plastic material, but with the addition of a thin aluminum skin. Although this may be slightly better than HDPE plastic, it's common to see the plastic and aluminum layers of the Alumapanel when looking at the numbers from a side angle. The layers will most likely be quite noticeable, which in our opinion is not a great look. Iron or steel is definitely a step above plastic as it's a strong durable metal. Unfortunately it's prone to rusting if any part of the coating is scratched off, or if any of the metal is exposed to the elements in areas such as the mounting holes. The most superior option is aluminum. It's lightweight for easy mounting, extremely rigid, and does not rust. Not only will it last a lifetime but it can be coated with a high quality powder coating for a great looking finish. 2. METAL THICKNESS We've seen many metal house numbers constructed out of very thin wall metal. If you see a product photo that is taken at a straight on angle you might not have any idea how thin the numbers are until you receive them and see them in person. Unfortunately at this point it's likely too late to choose different house numbers. Although metal house numbers are a good option, if they are too thin they will be able to bend, and the mounting hardware will likely not be as sturdy as it should be. Saying all that, we personally think the biggest drawback of thin metal house numbers is how they look, and in our opinion they don't look great. If a product is cheap to manufacture it's likely the aesthetics of the final product will reflect on this.

Here's two things to consider when looking at the coatings on house numbers: 1. COATING TYPE Plastic house numbers typically will not be coated and will be left in a raw plastic form. Coatings are generally on metal house numbers only. There are 2 main types of coatings; paint ,and powder coatings. Although they might look the same, the main difference of these two coatings is the durability. Paint has varying levels of quality ranging from cheap off the shelf products that won't last long, to more high end epoxies. If you're purchasing house numbers that have been painted you'll want to find out what type of paint has been used. Powder coatings are baked on, creating the most durable finish available. Powder coatings will last for decades and has the same great finish that you expect from a high quality paint. Ferosa uses only top of the line powders from the most reputable manufacturer globally. 2. ARE ALL SURFACES COATED It's easy to be fooled when purchasing house numbers online. We've seen house numbers online that look good in the product photos, only to find out that they weren't coated on the backside. We've also seen brushed aluminum house numbers online that claim to be coated, only to find out they weren't coated at all. Simply put, coatings that have been applied to all surfaces of a house number will protect it from corrosion and scratches. Although aluminum is a high quality metal, it's a soft metal that will easily scratch if it's not coated. Needless to say, all of our modern house numbers have a high quality powder coating finish on all sides of the numbers.

There are three main factors to consider when looking at how address numbers are mounted: 1. EXPOSED OR HIDDEN HARDWARE The old standard was to have holes in the front of each house number that you could drive a screw through to fasten the number to your house. This is simple and fast, and no specialized hardware is required. However that's where it stops, because appearance definitely is not a consideration with this style of exposed hardware. Does anyone really want to see the head of a phillips screw head in their house number? 2. HOW ARE STUDS SECURED Most higher quality modern house numbers have adopted a hidden hardware mounting method. This is a much better cosmetic choice, and if designed properly is very strong. However there are some things to look for when inspecting house numbers with hidden hardware. If the studs are glued into the number they will not be as strong as studs that are threaded into the numbers. 3. HARDWARE MATERIAL Like the material of the house number, the material of the hardware is important too. Plastic hardware is weak, can flex, and will become brittle with time. Iron or steel hardware will rust if not coated (typically studs are not coated). This rust can then leave rust stains on your numbers or house. To get scientific, if the metal house numbers are made from a different metal than the metal hardware, galvanic corrosion will likely occur. This is when two different metals are in direct contact with each other, which causes an electrochemical reaction as electrons move from the anode to the cathode. An example would be if the house numbers are made from aluminum and the mounting hardware is made from iron. In short, don't mix metals. At Ferosa we use aluminum numbers, aluminum studs, and aluminum spacers so that all metals have the same electrical potential. We want your house numbers to last a lifetime. 4. SPACER COATING The purpose of spacers is to create an offset from a surface (such as a wall) so that you can have visually appealing floating house numbers. Although it's not intended for spacers to be seen, they will always be visible to some degree when looking at the numbers from an angle. It's common place to have uncoated spacers that do not match the colour of the house numbers. At Ferosa, when we say the difference is in the details, we mean it. This is a detail that we did not overlook, and that's why all of our spacers are colour matched and finished the same as our address numbers.

Absolutely! With each and every order we include a custom drilling template. We design this to match your mounting orientation preference; either horizontal or vertical. This is a 100% scale CAD drawn template which shows you where to drill holes to mount your numbers. It has both horizontal and vertical lines that are centered and used for alignment and levelling. Each template is custom created in our studio with proper kerning for your specific address. Kerning is the spacing between individual letters or characters to create spacing that is as visually appealing as possible. This ensures your address numbers as a whole look great mounted on your home. Without a custom drilling template that's kerned to your entire group of address numbers, it would be extremely difficult to space each number properly (for best visual appeal). There would be a good chance you wouldn't be happy with the end result of how your numbers look together. This is a common problem when ordering house numbers that each have their own individual drilling template. When ordering from us you will never need to worry about this, as we always include a properly kerned template with every order. When placing your order just let us know what your address numbers are, and whether you'll be mounting your numbers horizontally or vertically. We'll take care of the template.

We offer 6 sizes of address numbers to select from; 4", 5", 6", 8", 10", and 12". Our 4 inch house numbers are generally used when space is an issue and they need to be mounted within a constrained area, or if you're wanting a very subtle look. Our 5 inch numbers are still relatively small and can be mounted without taking up much space, comparing closely in size to most traditional house numbers. Slightly larger numbers are on trend with modern homes, hence why our most popular house number sizes are 6, 8, and 10 inches tall. These sizes are easily seen from the street and provide a very modern touch to any house. For those that like big and bold, we have large 12 inch house numbers that will be sure to make a statement.

There are a few aspects to consider when choosing what size of modern house number is best for your property: 1. The first and most important thing to figure out is how much room is available to mount your address numbers. Our house numbers can be mounted either horizontally or vertically, so see which mounting orientation is best for you. Measure the distance both horizontally and vertically where you'd like to mount your numbers to see if they will fit. If space is a concern, you can refer to our CAD sizing drawings to determine the width of each number in your address, for each given size (height) of number. Factor in the space required between each number as well. Typical spacing between numbers is roughly as follows: HORIZONTAL SPACING (WHEN MOUNTED HORIZONTALLY) - 4" numbers: 0.5" - 5" numbers: 0.6" - 6" numbers: 0.7" - 8" numbers: 1" - 10" numbers: 1.2" - 12" numbers: 1.4" VERTICAL SPACING (WHEN MOUNTED VERTICALLY) - 4" numbers: 0.53" - 5" numbers: 0.66" - 6" numbers: 0.79" - 8" numbers: 1.06" - 10" numbers: 1.32" - 12" numbers: 1.58" 2. Secondly, you'll want to figure out what size of numbers you'll need so that your address is easily visible from the street. The further your address numbers are mounted from the street, the larger the numbers you'll want. Good visibility will help delivery drivers, first responders, and new friends quickly find your home. For a bold appearance, 10 and 12" numbers will be sure to get noticed. 3. Lastly, choose the size that you like. A size that matches your style, your home, and that you'll be happy with for years to come.

The width of each number varies by digit. The spacing between each address number will vary depending on the size of the numbers. The drawings below show the widths and spacing for each size (height) of address numbers. Please refer to these drawings for specific measurements. Please note that we kern every individual address for the best possible visual appeal. Due to the kerning process the spacing between each number in an address may vary from the measurements listed. We have 5 beautiful finishes to choose from, all of which are durable high quality powder coatings. We've carefully selected these colours and gloss levels to find the perfect finishes that create a luxury look we think you'll love. BLACK - This is a satin finish with low gloss (often called matte). Our black house numbers look great when they are mounted on lighter coloured surfaces to create high contrast. Concrete, stone, and brick also pair well with black. WHITE - This is satin finish with low gloss. Our white house numbers look best when mounted on darker coloured surfaces. White numbers are the most easily seen in the dark. DARK BRONZE - This is a dark metallic bronze with satin finish. Our dark bronze house numbers look best on lighter coloured surfaces. BRASS - This is a medium brass metallic with hints of gold. It has a clear coat to provide a flat finish with no shine. Our brass house numbers are a warm colour that looks equally great on light or dark surfaces. BRUSHED ALUMINUM - We brush each aluminum number by hand to create a rich, handcrafted appearance. We then apply a clear coat for a flat finish that matches well with the raw aluminum. These numbers look classy just about anywhere you install them.

Contrasting colours stand out the most and often look best. Black and dark bronze house numbers contrast the most with lighter surfaces. White contracts and looks the best when mounted on dark surfaces. Brass and brushed aluminum are medium shades so they look good on both dark or light surfaces. Also consider the colour scheme of your home and decide if you want to match the theme. However, the colour of your modern house numbers don't necessarily need to match your homes colours or accents. If you're still uncertain after all of the considerations, choose a finish that makes you happy:)

For each order of modern house numbers we create a custom mounting template for your specific address. This makes installing your new house numbers very easy. Although there is no difference in the numbers themselves depending on the mounting orientation you choose, the mounting template will be different. Please let us know whether you'll be mounting your house numbers horizontally (side by side) or vertically (up and down), and we'll create a mounting template to your preference. If you are ready to buy address numbers but are unsure of how you'll mount them, just write "horizontal and vertical" in the orientation section. We'll then create and include both templates with your order. You can then choose your mounting orientation once you receive your house numbers.

You'll require an adhesive to secure the mounting studs, which is not included. We recommend using a clear exterior grade 2 part epoxy. All of our modern house numbers are in stock so there's no need for you to wait weeks while we custom make your order. We aim to have your order ship as soon as possible. If we're lucky we can sometimes have your order packed and shipped the same day if your order is placed early in the morning. In most cases your order will be picked up by the courier next business day and on it's way. In some cases it may takes us 2 business days to get your order together and shipped out, but rest assured it's our priority to get our luxury address numbers to you fast! We usually ship with UPS as our courier. Depending on your location in Canada or the US, your package will generally be in transit for 2-6 business days. Once your order ships you'll receive a tracking number so that you can see the estimated date of delivery. Our standard shipping is free of charge to our customers. Yes! Once your order ships you'll receive an email with your tracking number to track delivery and estimated arrival date. Typically we will use UPS as our courier.

Unfortunately we do not ship to countries other than Canada and the US at this time.

We're not sure what superpowers UPS or Fedex might have in how they delivery to locations without address numbers. Although they might be able to, we're not confident in it. We recommend writing your address on a large piece of paper or cardboard with a marker and putting it in your window where it's most visible. If you're in a brand new subdivision and are concerned about delivery, an option is to use a different shipping address that you can have your house numbers delivered to. Perhaps you have a friends or family nearby with an established address.

It's simple! With each order we include easy to follow directions that include colour photos. We've designed our address numbers and our instructions so that installation is a breeze. Only a few basic tools are required to install our luxury address numbers. There's a good chance you already have everything you need. However if you're missing a tool or two, we're betting you've got a neighbour or friend that can lend you what you need. Here's the tool list: 1. TAPE MEASURE: To align your template on the mounting surface. 2. LEVEL: To level your template. 3. DRILL: To drill holes for the mounting studs. A hammer drill if drilling into masonry or stone. 4. 3/16 DRILL BIT: This is the size of hole that the mounting studs will fit into. A masonry bit will be required for drilling into concrete or brick. A diamond tipped drill bit may be required for some stone. 5. RUBBER MALLET (Optional): To gently tap the house numbers and studs into the mounting holes.

Our house numbers can be installed on most surfaces. You'll want to select a rigid surface so that the numbers are mounted securely and won't move. To mount our house numbers you simply need to drill small holes in the mounting surface in which the mounting studs will be inserted into. You'll then apply an adhesive in the holes to secure the studs and seal the hole. RECOMMENDED MOUNTING SURFACES 1. Stucco 2. Wood 3. Brick 4. Concrete 5. Stone (as flat as possible) 6. Hardie board NOT RECOMMENDED 1. Vinyl Siding 2. Uneven surfaces such as a rough stone Vinyl siding is a poor mounting surface since it's not rigid, is difficult to apply an epoxy to for a strong hold, and hard to seal the mounting holes to keep moisture out. If you have vinyl siding we recommend mounting your house numbers on another surface such as wood trim, a fence, a flat faced rock, a post, or any other rigid surface you might have on your property that has good street visibility. For mounting on stones it's best to use as flat as a surface as possible for the mounting location. We'd recommend not using the provided spacers as they will not all sit flush against the stone unless it's perfectly flat. However you can still achieve a floating look by sinking the mounting studs into the stone at varying depths so that the front faces of the numbers are all flush. This will result in a clean looking professional install.

You'll first want to choose your mounting location. Find a location that's easy to see from the street so that your address numbers can be quickly spotted. Then determine whether your house numbers will fit in that location horizontally or vertically. The most popular mounting orientation is horizontal, however vertical orientations are often best for posts or pillars. If your siding has horizontal ribs, slats, or boards, it might be easiest to mount your numbers horizontally along one or two of the pieces. If your siding is mounted in a vertical fashion it may be best to install your house numbers vertically to match. When installing your numbers you'll want the front faces of all the numbers to be flush. The easiest way to achieve this is if the mounting surface where the holes are drilled is flush. Every situation is different though, so take a look at your specific mounting location and space available to determine what's best for you.

The great thing about our house numbers is that they'll last a very long time with no special care. All of our address number are finished with a UV stable powder coat. This is an incredibly durable coating that's great for exposure to the the elements and direct sunlight. You may want to clean the dust off from time to time though to keep your modern house numbers looking their best. Simply add a mild detergent such as dish soap to some water. Then dip a soft cloth in the soapy water and wipe your house numbers clean. Rinse the numbers with clean water to wash the soap off. We recommend doing this when your numbers are shaded so the sun doesn't dry the soapy water before you can rinse it off.

When you receive an order from us you'll find everything to be 100% curbside recyclable. This includes glassine, paper, and cardboard. We don't believe in sending your products in plastic packaging, only to have it thrown out afterwards.

The great thing about aluminum is that it lasts forever and it is easily recycled. Every bit of aluminum that is left over from our fabrication process is recycled as clean aluminum. Unlike plastic house numbers numbers which will likely need to be thrown out and replaced after a handful of years, our metal house numbers are built to last a lifetime.

For most standard orders you will be able to make your address number selections online and proceed with your purchase. For each set of house numbers, simply select the finish, size, number of digits required, mounting orientation, and enter the address numbers. Then click add to cart. Continue the same process for each subsequent set of house numbers required. Once all your sets of address numbers have been added to the cart you can then checkout to complete the transaction.
